Karoline Buchner is a doctoral candidate and research associate at the research area Medical Anthropology | Global Health of the Institute of Social and Cultural Anthropology at Freie Universität Berlin. Her doctoral project is entitled “Cultivating partnerships – Chinese medicine as a form of public and everyday diplomacy under Taiwan’s New Southbound Policy.” It examines the transformation of Chinese medicine as it is mobilized for diplomatic projects and the everyday transnational relations emerging from such collaborations. She graduated from Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin with a Bachelor’s degree in Area Studies Asia/Africa, and from Freie Universität Berlin with a Master’s degree in Social and Cultural Anthropology. She previously conducted ethnographic fieldwork in Taipei on lay knowledge and informal and professional Chinese medical education in Taiwan. Prior to her doctoral project, she was a research associate at the Institute of Chinese Life Sciences (ICL) at Charité Berlin, working on a database project on Chinese historical healthcare manuscripts. Her research interests include complementary and alternative medical practices (CAM), (medical) diplomacy, science and technology studies, transnationalism, and issues of race and gender.
