The history of Herbarium Tubingense begins around 1800 with a natural history collection at Schloss Hohentübingen. Based on the plant specimens from this collection, the botany professor Hugo von Mohl founded the Herbarium Tubingense as an independent collection in 1837. In 1846, the herbarium moved into the Botanical Institute adjacent to the Old Botanical Garden, and in 1968 it moved again uphill to its current location on the new Morgenstelle campus.
