Biography

Chen Chung-hsuan 陳仲暄 (Jonathan) is a Ph.D. candidate at the Graduate Institute of East Asian Studies, National Chengchi University, Taiwan. His research focuses on the relationship between religion and politics in Southeast Asia, especially in Malaysia and Myanmar.

During his master’s studies, he became interested in regional studies, looking at the connections between Hakka(客家) communities and Southeast Asia.
He chose Myanmar as his main case and took a micro-level approach by working with his own family history to better understand broader historical and social contexts, something like “seeing the big through the small.” His master’s thesis awarded the "Outstanding Thesis Award from the Overseas Community Affairs Council, Taiwan" in 2020.

As a doctoral researcher, Jonathan continues to work on Southeast Asia, with a focus on Myanmar’s elections and religious-political relations in Malaysia. To better understand the situation in Myanmar, he conducted fieldwork there and observed the military’s influence on the electoral process in December 2025. He has also carried out several rounds of fieldwork in Malaysia. As he often says, “If you haven't seen it, you cannot truly understand it.” His research is therefore closely tied to field observation and first-hand experience.

In his current research, he examines how overseas Chinese leaders navigate between China and Taiwan.
