Abstract
Most of us encounter AI systems and large language models from the outside, as text goes in and text comes out, with little sense of what happens in between. This short seminar opens up that middle space. We will begin with how these models actually work: how text becomes numbers, how attention lets a model weigh context, how prediction over a vocabulary produces something that reads as writing, and how post-training and fine-tuning shape a model's habits and voice.
Along the way, we also consider interpretability and impact, discussing how a technical understanding of language model architecture can help us better understand how AI systems are starting to shape how we communicate and engage with each other. Part of our discussion will involve forays into conducting original research: short hands-on exercises, built beforehand so that no prior coding experience is required, will let participants run and modify small experiments. The aim is for you to leave with enough technical footing to read claims about AI critically, to ask informed questions of how AI systems impact norms of communication and sociality, and to be able to research and experiment with AI to help you answer some of those questions.
