The designated period of the study program is four semesters (two years - 120 ECTS) and can be started in the winter semester only. In general, the program is a mix of compulsory modules (12 ECTS) that provide essential skills for pursuing an academic career in archaeology, and compulsory-elective modules (66 ECTS) that allow for in-depth specialization in one or more of the different disciplines involved. Students will also complete a project or work experience (12 ECTS) and a Master thesis (30 ECTS). The program language is English.
All students in the program begin with three introductory modules their first semester, “Introduction, Theories and Methods” and “Digital Archaeology” which provide them with a solid foundation for continuing their studies and research. Additionally, students select a first module from various specializations within the archaeological disciplines so that they can explore the range of possible trajectories for their thesis. Students also choose a module in archaeological sciences offered by the MSc „Archaeological Sciences and Human Evolution“.
Detailed information on the study contents can be found in the Module Handbook or check out the current course listings on ALMA. Information on the general provisions of the University of Tübingen exam regulations for Master’s degree programs can be found here and the special ones for the M.A. "Archaeology" here. Please, note that in both cases the legally binding version is the German one provided on Student Affairs.
