1960 wurde Ommo Grupe als Direktor die Leitung des Instituts für Leibesübungen übertragen. Grupe war in Tübingen der erste promovierte Leiter in der langen Geschichte des Instituts.
Ab 1964 konnte „Leibesübungen“ als 2. Hauptfach für das Lehramt studiert werden.
1965 Einrichtung einer Stelle für die Leitung des Bereichs Studiengänge (Dr. Peter Röthig, 1965-1969; Dr. Herbert Haag, 1969-1972; Dr. Franz Begov, 1972-1997; Dr. Stefan König, 1997-2006; Dr. Andreas Hoffmann, seit 2006).
Ab 1966 konnte „Leibesübungen“ als erstes Hauptfach für das Lehramt studiert werden. 1966 wurde außerdem das neue Institut „im Ziegeltäle“ bezogen. Nach Klärung der personellen Situation 1967 stellte sich dann auch die Frage der Stellung des Instituts für Leibesübungen an der Universität.
Seit 1967 gab es an der Universität Tübingen den „Lehrstuhl für die Theorie der Leibeserziehung“.
1967 habilitierte Ommo Grupe. 1967 wurde ebenfalls der Magisterstudiengang am IfL eingeführt. Grupe wurde schließlich am 11. Juni 1968 zum ordentlichen Professor für „Theorie der Leibeserziehung“ ernannt.
Das Institut war bislang der philosophischen Fakultät unterstellt, die Sportstätten dienten jedoch der Gesamtuniversität.
1968 war geprägt durch die Studentenbewegung. Der Protest der Studenten richtete sich gegen die autoritären Strukturen der Gesellschaft. Sie forderten die Ablösung der Theorie der Leibeserziehung durch den dialektischen Materialismus. Ihre Kritik richtete sich gegen die „Eigenrealisation“ des Sportlehrers und gegen praktische Prüfungen im Rahmen der Ausbildung. Die Eingangsprüfung wurde einmal sogar dadurch verhindert, dass Gülle in die Weitsprunggrube gefüllt wurde. Außerdem drängten die Studenten auf mehr Mitbestimmung.
