Practical Theology, as I understand it, is an academic discipline within the institutional framework of a university that focuses on the perception and understanding of religious practice in society. It reflects the conditions of individualisation and secularisation and should therefore not be limited to ecclesiastical Christianity. Together with other theological disciplines and in interdisciplinary dialogue with religious studies as well as the social sciences, literature, and cultural studies, it contributes to the understanding of religious practice. In addition to basic research, this also offers perspectives for the reflection of professional practice in church and society as well as the orientation of church leadership. Besides historical and conceptual approaches, Practical Theology works with methods of empirical social scientific research. Birgit Weyel
