Never-again reunification – 100 interjections on German reunification

Paula Fürstenberg is furious. Like all children of the post-Reunification era, she was promised flourishing landscapes and anti-fascism in the euphoria surrounding German reunification. The reality turned out to be quite different: unemployment, depopulation and right-wing violence. And today: the right-wing populist to far-right politics of a party that is only too happy to embrace the patriotic and nationalist idea of internal unity.

Drawing on her own life story, she fills in the gaps in our narrative of German reunification. Through her incisive, sometimes boisterous, sometimes tender interjections, she comes to the conclusion that we do not need to grow together into a single people. Far more important is a language that does justice to Germany’s diversity.

Paula Fürstenberg, born in 1987, grew up in Potsdam and studied at the Swiss Literature Institute and Humboldt University. Her debut novel, “Familie der geflügelten Tiger”, was published in 2016, followed by her second novel, “Weltalltage”, in 2024. She has been awarded numerous scholarships for her work.

As well as working as a writer, she is also active as a curator, lecturer, editor and in various artistic collectives. She is currently a jury member for the International Literature Prize and is touring with the literary girl band No Scribes. Fürstenberg has lived in Berlin since 2011 and, in the summer, also at a dacha in Brandenburg.
