Racism, hate speech, violence against ‘left-wing scum’, homosexuals and migrants, and open Holocaust denial – this was the everyday reality experienced by teachers Laura Nickel and Max Teske at their school. Horrified and determined to take action, they published an open letter in which they denounced “a wall of silence” as well as the lack of support for schools from local authorities, politicians and parents.
Following the publication, the pair received solidarity and praise, but also faced fierce hostility. Their story, their experiences and the striking accounts from other teachers and pupils show just how much children at school are now exposed to the danger of far-right indoctrination and threats based on their background, sexuality or political views. This book is both a wake-up call and an encouragement to take action and shape the world our children live in so that they can continue to live in a democracy in the future.
The book RechtsRUCK IM KLASSENZIMMER – How New Right ideologies are taking hold in schools and threatening our children by Laura Nickel and Max Teske was published on 11 March 2026 by Wilhelm Heyne Verlag, Munich.
