State elections in Germany could bring the far right to power for the first time since the Second World War (translated)
“It would be a milestone if the AfD were actually to win the elections and form its first government. That would be a landslide victory that would have a truly enormous impact on the political landscape in Germany. Perhaps they will not succeed in government, but this will serve as a beacon, a sign that they can be the strongest party and can also mobilise other parts of the country,” said Frankenberger. “The AfD has become stronger and more extreme along this path. And this is a development quite similar to that of the 1920s with National Socialism – these are not the same people, they are not the same party, and they do not have identical interests or issues. But the rise of a growing far-right party that is becoming increasingly attractive reminds us of Germany’s past with the National Socialists, and that is very frightening for many people,” explained PD Dr Rolf Frankenberger to the Brazilian daily newspaper Estadão.
