It doesn’t get any bluer than this— the state elections in the east and the threat of AfD taking power

Online talk on August 7 at 7 p.m. with David Begrich on the elections in Saxony-Anhalt, in German

The Institute for Research on Right-Wing Extremism in Tübingen cordially invites you to an online lecture on August 7, 2026, starting at 7:00 p.m., on the topic

“It Doesn’t Get Any Bluer Than This—The State Elections in Eastern Germany and the Threat of an AfD Takeover” with David Begrich.

Will the AfD in Saxony-Anhalt mark the first time since 1945 that a far-right party has governed a federal state? Polls suggest that the AfD could succeed in forming a government. And even if it does not govern, its influence will grow due to the expected increase in votes.

What does this mean for the democratic culture in Saxony-Anhalt?

What consequences would this have for those who, politically or ideologically, do not fit into the AfD’s vision of an authoritarian restructuring of society? Will Saxony-Anhalt become a testing ground for a far-right social experiment?

David Begrich is a staff member of “Miteinander e.V.” and a recognized expert on conditions in Saxony-Anhalt and the rest of eastern Germany. The goal is to provide a West German audience with an analysis from an East German expert on the ground, in part to make an East German perspective and expertise visible and audible.
