REACT - Jewish Re-actions on antisemitism in educational institutions

On 1 March, the three-year sub-project "Institutional Anti-Semitism" was launched at IRex as part of the collaborative project "REACT – Jewish Reactions to Anti-Semitism in Educational Institutions".

This interdisciplinary collaborative project examines the experiences of Jewish people as victims of antisemitism, as well as the conditions and constraints on their participation in educational institutions, with the aim of countering antisemitism in institutional educational contexts and promoting Jewish participation.

Four sub-projects will examine (1) Jewish people as visible actors who, as pupils, students and teachers, speak out against and organise against anti-Semitism; (2) educational institutions themselves, on the one hand with regard to institutional practices, bodies of knowledge and norms that create and perpetuate anti-Semitism; and (3) on the other hand, institutional anti-Semitism is examined in terms of its impact as a transgenerational and biographical category of experience in the life courses of Jewish people; and (4) universities are examined as educational institutions to determine how Jewish and anti-Semitism-critical education can be developed and embedded in university teacher training for religion-related subjects. The research findings are intended to inform the evidence-based development of concepts for inclusive and anti-Semitism-critical education, teaching methodology and organisational culture, which will be implemented in educational institutions, Jewish education and youth work.

The project is funded by Bundesministerium für Forschung, Technologie und Raumfahrt (BMFTR) as a part of the Research-Network Antisemitism in the 21 century. FoNA21
