Institute for Research on Far Right Extremism (IRex)

Strengthening democracy and the resilience of (civil) society and state structures against far-right ideologies and practices through academic inquiry is a guiding principle of IRex.

The institute conducts research on far-right extremism and its societal embeddedness. Its findings aim to contribute to the strengthening of democracy within both the state and civil society. Researchers from various disciplines investigate far-right extremism and its societal contexts in Baden-Württemberg and beyond. Three professorships for research on far-right extremism are permanently funded by the state of Baden-Württemberg. In addition, a fourth professorship focusing on social science-based antisemitism research is being established.

IRex’s transdisciplinary research aims to understand the political and everyday dimensions of far-right extremism. Its research findings are intended to promote an active democratic ethos grounded in universal human rights. Dialogue and transfer of knowledge are central to the IRex approach. The institute collaborates with organizations and individuals from academia, government, and civil society throughout all phases of research and outreach. Research questions are developed in dialogue with partners from research, practice, government, and civil society, and the findings are communicated in a target group-oriented manner across various societal levels.
