The strain collection of bacterial natural product producers at the Interfaculty Institute for Microbiology and Infection Medicine (IMIT), founded by Hans Zähner more than 50 years ago and steadily extended by Hans-Peter Fiedler and other colleagues at Tübingen, is a valuable resource for the discovery of novel bioactive natural products.
Over 2,000 natural product producers, mostly Actinomycetes, are conserved in a biobank and more than 1,000 natural products are available as isolated compounds.
