Dr. Lilian Chaitas

Associate Professor for Teaching English Literatures and Cultures


Lilian Chaitas studied English and German for becoming a teacher in secondary education (Staatsexamen) and American Studies and German Literature towards an M.A. at Eberhard Karls University Tübingen, Germany, and at Wadham College at the University of Oxford, Great Britain. She is an alumna of the German Academic Scholarship Foundation (Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes).­

Upon her graduation, she became a Ph.D. candidate specializing in theories of cultural avant-gardism and American poetry of the mid-to-late twentieth century at the American Studies Department at Tübingen University. She later also joined the department as a research fellow and academic advisor. In 2013, she completed her Ph.D. thesis which was published in an revised and extended version as Being Different: Strategies of Distinction and Twentieth-Century American Poetic Avant-Gardes with Ferdinand Schöningh.­

After finishing her teacher training in 2015, she continued to worked as a full-time teacher of English and German at a secondary school in Stuttgart.

Since 2016, Lilian Chaitas has been Associate Professor for Teaching English Literatures and Cultures at the University of Tübingen.­

Her current teaching and research focus on integrating literature (both capital 'L' and small 'l' literature) in the competence-based EFL classroom. She is also program coordinator and special advisor for the Bachelor of Education offering advice and guidance for students in the University's Bachelor degree program for teaching English at secondary schools.
