Star-planet interactions in nature and observations

Giovanni Bruno, INAF/OA Catania, Italy — July 22, 2024

Observations and models are converging to a scenario where the interactions between stars and planets are key to unveil how planetary systems evolve in time. In this talk, I will present an outline of the types of interactions that are thought to play a major role in shaping the populations of mature planets we observe today. To answer the questions that are still open, the detailed understanding of stellar processes represents a crucial aspect, both from the physical and the observational point of view: I will then focus on a few ongoing collaborative projects that aim to glean information about exoplanet host stars to better understand both them and their companions, following the now popular expression "know thy star, know thy planet".
