My main research focus is materials science in the field of advanced ceramics, composites and more recently, traditional ceramics of archaeological interest. The research covers processing, characterisation and evaluation of ceramics (from silicates and oxides like alumina and zirconia to carbon, carbides, nitrides or borides). Particular expertise exists in the chemical property evaluation (oxidation and corrosion). Other research goals are phase relations, mechanical properties, biomimetics of biomaterials.

My teaching covers different aspects of archaeological science and theory and I am leading a series of courses on material science and archaeological ceramics

I specialize in GIS applied to the analysis of past mobilities, geoarchaeology, and archaeometrical research. My main focus is on elaborating mobility models based on isotopic analyses of  ⁸⁷Sr/⁸⁶Sr and δ¹⁸O in ancient human groups. I have contributed in areas such as Early Holocene mobility of hunter-gatherer groups in South America, as well as the interactions between Full Bronze Age settlements in southern Spain.

In addition, I use biochemical analysis such as isotope analysis applied to bone & teeth material to investigate subsistence patterns (δ¹³C and δ¹⁵N) and mobility patterns of prehistoric communities (⁸⁷Sr/⁸⁶Sr and δ¹⁸O).

My research focus on inorganic archaeological remains, with a particular emphasis on ancient ceramics.

I apply a multi-analytical approach, integrating petrography, geochemistry, mineralogy, and sedimentology, to delve into ceramic provenance studies, examining trade networks, the transfer of technological knowledge, and cultural practices.

PhD title: Untersuchungen zur Herkunft bronzezeitlicher Goldobjekte mittels mobiler Laserablation und Massenspektrometrie

In the course of my doctoral studies, I apply the innovative portable laser ablation technique (pLA) in combination with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) for the scientific study and material characterization of Aegean Bronze Age gold objects, inter alia from Mycenae and Troy.
My further research interests cover a wide range between archaeometry, physics, and ancient history:

• Atomic physics
• X-ray fluorescence
• Latin epigraphy, especially Roman imperial titulature and chronology
• Ancient numismatics
• History of the city of Rome

PhD title: “Technological Transfer in the Central Mediterranean: Ancient Lime Mortars and Plasters from Carthage, Pantelleria, and Solunto”

My research focuses on the archaeological and archaeometric analysis of ancient lime mortars used for historic construction during the Roman-Punic era. The study involves an interdisciplinary investigation on 3 culturally interconnected Punic sites - Carthage, Pantelleria and Solunt, to understand the mortar production and processing techniques, and the transfer of the technology in the Central Mediterranean.
