I am a research scientist within the Archaeometry Research Group of the University of Tübingen and an active member of the Archaeomaterials Research Network (AMRN, University College London). Archaeomaterials are my primary fields of research, with an emphasis on ceramic and the multifaceted interactions between resources, technology, and society. My teaching covers different aspects of archaeological science and theory and I am leading a series of courses on material science and archaeological ceramics

My research focus on inorganic archaeological remains, with a particular emphasis on ancient ceramics.

I apply a multi-analytical approach, integrating petrography, geochemistry, mineralogy, and sedimentology, to delve into ceramic provenance studies, examining trade networks, the transfer of technological knowledge, and cultural practices.

Material characterization, ceramic petrography, LA-Inductively Couple Plasma Mass Spectroscopy, WD-X-ray fluorescence, X-Ray diffraction, Scanning electron microscopy, Geo-informatic (GIS).

My research focuses on the application of arcaheometric techniques on ancient ceramics in order to investigate aspects of technology, provenance, exchange and communication networks. In particular, my work integrates ceramic petrography, XRPD, micro-XRD, XRF, micro-XRF, SEM-EDS, and Raman spectroscopy to study both ceramic fabrics and painted decoration. My research up to now has involved materials from various areas and chronological periods (Greece, Romania, Iraq, Iran).

PhD title: Untersuchungen zur Herkunft bronzezeitlicher Goldobjekte mittels mobiler Laserablation und Massenspektrometrie

In the course of my doctoral studies, I apply the innovative portable laser ablation technique (pLA) in combination with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) for the scientific study and material characterization of Aegean Bronze Age gold objects, inter alia from Mycenae and Troy.
My further research interests cover a wide range between archaeometry, physics, and ancient history:

  • Atomic physics
  • X-ray fluorescence
  • Latin epigraphy, especially Roman imperial titulature and chronology
  • Ancient numismatics
  • History of the city of Rome

PhD title: “Technological Transfer in the Central Mediterranean: Ancient Lime Mortars and Plasters from Carthage, Pantelleria, and Solunto”

My research focuses on the archaeological and archaeometric analysis of ancient lime mortars used for historic construction during the Roman-Punic era. The study involves an interdisciplinary investigation on 3 culturally interconnected Punic sites - Carthage, Pantelleria and Solunto, to understand the mortar production and processing techniques, and the transfer of the technology in the Central Mediterranean.
