In the Department of Japanese Studies at the University of Tübingen, the position of an

Postdoctoral Researcher (m/f/d; pay grade E 13 TV-L, 100%)

is to be filled starting September 1, 2024, initially for a duration of 3 years (with the possibility of extension for another 3 years upon positive interim evaluation of the project).

The postdoc position is part of the Emmy Noether Junior Research Group "The Japanese Alpine Empire: A Transnational Environmental History of Japan's 'Alpine' Landscapes" under the direction of Junior Professor Dr. Fynn Holm. The position holder is expected to independently work on the postdoc sub-project "The Japanese Alpine Empire in Taiwan/Korea (1895-1945)" designed for a period of six years. The sub-project should result in a monograph and one or more articles. In addition to working on the sub-project, other tasks within the framework of the junior research group include organizing workshops and a symposium, participating in junior research group seminars, providing informal guidance to doctoral students, co-editing an edited volume, and public relations work. Furthermore, willingness to conduct several months of field research in East Asia is expected.

The prerequisite for employment is a very good doctoral degree in an area of East Asian studies, history, or cultural studies with a focus on Asia. Very good language skills in English and Japanese are expected, and ideally basic knowledge of another East Asian language (Chinese or Korean).
