Final Report: Anti-Semitism following 7 October 2023 – Impact on Jewish and Israeli communities in Germany

The Federal Anti-Discrimination Agency (ADS) has published our study on Jewish life in Germany

The terrorist attack on Israel on 7 October 2023 has shaken Jewish people around the world. In response, the Federal Anti-Discrimination Agency funded a study on the ‘Impact of the terrorist attack on 7 October 2023 on Jewish and Israeli communities in Germany’. The study was carried out at KOAS – the Centre of Excellence for Education and Research on Anti-Semitism – in cooperation with the Institute for Research on Far Right Extremism (IRex) at the University of Tübingen.
Over a period of just under three years, the study examined how Jewish and Israeli communities in Germany experienced the terrorist attack and the period that followed. For the first time, young people and children aged 7 and above were also interviewed about their experiences.

The study’s lead researchers, Friederike Lorenz-Sinai and Marina Chernivsky, say: “For the study participants, 7 October feels like an ‘invasion’ into their lives – both because of the overwhelming nature of the unbridled violence of the massacres and because of the shattering of their certainty that they are part of a society that supports and protects them. The anti-Semitic mobilisation and the societal reactions to it have permanently altered the social atmosphere and, with it, the security situation of the Jewish and Israeli communities. The repercussions extend into almost every area of daily life. The experience of an environment that is both passive and hostile leads to a re-evaluation of affiliations, beliefs about safety, the weighing up of life choices and future prospects, and restricts participation in society.”

The study examines how Jewish and Israeli communities in Germany are experiencing and coming to terms with the terrorist attack on 7 October, the rise in anti-Semitic radicalisation in the aftermath, and the societal reactions to these events. It is the first multilingual, nationwide qualitative survey on the impact of terrorism and anti-Semitism on Jewish and Israeli communities in Germany. A total of 118 participants took part in the qualitative study over a two-year period, through narrative interviews, group discussions and self-observations.
