Thore Menze obtained both his Bachelor's and Master's degree in history at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. Combining approaches of social and cultural history, his master's thesis dealt with the role of German nationalism during the 'Befreiungskriege' of 1813-1815 and the popular response to the introduction of nationalism in the principality of Schaumburg-Lippe. ("Mobil gemacht. Nationale Mobilisierung und Bevölkerungsverhalten im Fürstentum Schaumburg-Lippe 1813-1815".)

On the project “FuS – Freedom of Movement and Social Policy in Historical and International Comparison”, he focuses on the adoption and impact of the legislation concerning freedom of movement and poor relief in the North German Confederation and the early German Empire.
