Pyroarchaeology

A number of archaeological and experimental projects center around the use of fire in the past. We conduct controlled experiments to produce burned materials for further analysis, generate reference databases and teaching materials, and study ancient archaeological features and deposits containing burned materials. In Pleistocene contexts we study the controlled use of fire, identification of intact and reworked fire features, and use of space within sites. In later time periods, our work includes analysis of burned stabling deposits, ritual altars, cooking installations, kilns, fired lime plaster, burned buildings, and middens containing discarded wastes.
