Planet formation's early stages: Global simulations and observational constraints

Mario Flock, MPIA Heidelberg - 21.01.19

Abstract:

In this talk I will introduce current research in the area of planet formation. One critical ingredient is the dynamics and the evolution of gas and dust making up the disk orbiting the young star. I will present latest results based on state-of-the-art 3D radiation magneto-hydrodynamical models of such disks and compare them with our current constraints from high resolution multi-wavelength observations. In particular the dust distribution obtained from multi-wavelength observations allows us to test different models.
I will also show the possibility of explaining millimeter wavelength polarization by dust grains which are aligned by the magnetic field threading the disk. Finally I will discuss the outlook for observing such processes in action using current and upcoming telescope facilities. The next goal will be to connect our planet formation picture to occurrence rates from the large sample of recent discovered exoplanetary systems.
