Departmental Seminar "On the way to a ‘geoeconomic’ decarbonization? Carbon lock-ins, global re-ordering and German pathways to net zero"

Prof. Dr. Milan Babic (Roskilde University) on Wednesday, 19 July, 16:15-17:45, Room 124 at the Institute of Political Science

How can decarbonization governance endure under increasing geoeconomic distress? Renewed global rivalries threaten to divert financial and political resources away from the green transition towards national security issues. In this talk, Milan Babic analyzes the geoeconomic shock of Russia's natural gas cutoff to Germany in 2022 and its effects on national decarbonization pathways as a case in point. He traces the effects of this shock by analyzing its investment, operational and regulatory consequences, and in how far they accelerate or curb the decarbonization of Germany’s growth model.

Milan Babic is an Assistant Professor in Global Political Economy at the Department of Social Sciences and Business at Roskilde University and PI of the DECARB project. His work deals with the transformations of the global political economy in the transition from a neoliberal towards a post-neoliberal global order. His latest book is The Rise of State Capital (Agenda 2023).
