Englisches Seminar

Bachelor of Education ("Lehramt")

English is the most frequently taught and studied language worldwide. Our Bachelor of Education programme provides future teachers of English with insights into the diversity of the English language, literatures and cultures and prepares them for the challenges of teaching English professionally at secondary schools.

In the subject-specific part of our programme, we pride ourselves on offering our students courses that cover a wide range of topics and texts on the English language and Anglophone literatures and cultures. The teaching-related part of the programme is designed to equip students with the competences needed as future teachers of English. While investigating the conditions and processes of learning and teaching, students examine current topics and new texts in order to explore the possibilities of integrating them into the classroom. English can only be studied as a major (Hauptfach or Vorleistungen Erweiterungsfach) in the Bachelor of Education.

Our curriculum mirrors the research-oriented profile of teacher education advanced by the Tübingen School of Education (TüSE). The TüSE is supported by the national campaign "Quality Initiative Teacher Education" ("Qualitätsoffensive Lehrerbildung"). Since 2016, 18 additional chairs for teacher education have been created at the University of Tübingen.

The English Department is committed to excellence in teaching and research with a dedicated and internationally acknowledged staff, including eleven professors and one full professor for Teaching English as a Foreign Language. We offer an attractive study environment with state-of-the-art university libraries, a Research and Writing Center especially for English students, a Language Learning Centre, interdisciplinary lectures in the Studium Generale, and student theater hosting frequent English-language productions.

We encourage our students to spend time in an English-speaking country. This is an invaluable opportunity for students to improve their language skills and to immerse themselves in a different culture and academic environment. The University of Tübingen offers exchange programmes with more than fifty partner universities in the United Kingdom, North America, Ireland, India and Australia.
