FAQ about the Study Program

What are the language requirements for studying the B.Ed. English? (in German)

Lehramtsstudierende studieren nach zwei Ordnungen. Zum einen nach der sog. Rahmenvorgabenverordnung Lehramtsstudiengänge des Kultusministeriums Baden-Württemberg (RahmenVO-KM) die einheitlich für alle allgemein bildenden Lehramtsstudiengänge in Baden-Württemberg gilt. Zum anderen die universitäre Prüfungsordnung der Universität Tübingen.

Sprachvoraussetzungen als besondere Studienvoraussetzungen für den Bachelor und Master of Education sind in der sog. Rahmenvorgabenverordnung Lehramtsstudiengänge des Kultusministeriums Baden-Württemberg (RahmenVO-KM) definiert.

Für das Studienfach Englisch müssen Sie als Studienvoraussetzung an der Universität Tübingen folgende Sprachkenntnisse nachweisen:

Kenntnisse des Englischen auf dem Sprachniveau B2 nach dem Gemeinsamen Europäischen Referenzrahmen für Sprachen (GeR) das Latinum oder Kenntnisse einer weiteren modernen Fremdsprache auf dem Sprachniveau A2 nach dem Gemeinsamen Europäischen Referenzrahmen für Sprachen (GeR)


Nachweis von schulischen Kenntnissen

Grundsätzlich gilt: Sofern die geforderten Sprachkenntnisse bereits in der Schule erworben worden sind und über die bei der Bewerbung eingereichte Hochschulzugangsberechtigung (meist Abiturzeugnis) inklusive Vermerk des GeR-Niveaus nachgewiesen werden können, wenden Sie sich bitte mit den entsprechenden Unterlagen an das zuständige Prüfungsamt für geisteswissenschaftliche Fächer. Hier werden die Sprachanforderungen in alma, dem Portal zum Prüfungsmanagement der Universität Tübingen, verbucht.
Nach der Verbuchung können Sie Ihre nachgewiesenen Sprachkenntnisse unter der Rubrik "Sprachvoraussetzung" in Ihrer Leistungsübersicht nachvollziehen. Die Abkürzung "L" steht für Leistungsschein, "0" steht für die Anzahl der ECTS. Da es sich um Studienvoraussetzungen handelt, sind 0 ECTS ausgewiesen. "BE" steht für "bestanden".

Sollten auf Ihrer Hochschulzugangsberechtigung Fremdsprachenkenntnisse nicht mit einem Vermerk des GeR-Niveaus ausgewiesen sein, wenden Sie sich bitte zunächst an das Fremdsprachenzentrum der Universität Tübingen (FSZ), um sich das entsprechende GeR-Niveau bescheinigen zu lassen. Mit der Bescheinigung des FSZ können Sie sich anschließend zur Verbuchung mit dem zuständigen Prüfungsamt für geisteswissenschaftliche Fächer in Verbindung setzen.

Nachholen von Sprachvoraussetzungen

Sollten erforderliche Sprachkenntnisse zu Studienbeginn noch nicht nachgewiesen werden können, besteht die Möglichkeit, diese während des Studiums nachzuholen.

Das Fremdsprachenzentrum der Universität Tübingen (FSZ) berät Sie gerne über Ihre Möglichkeiten.
Bitte beachten Sie: Die Möglichkeit zum Nachholen von Fremdsprachkenntnissen gilt nicht für die geforderten Kenntnisse des Englischen.

Fristen

Eine bestimmte Frist für den Nachweis von erforderlichen Fremdsprachenkenntnissen ist nicht vorgesehen. Allerdings empfehlen wir Ihnen, fehlende Fremdsprachenkenntnisse während der Studieneingangsphase, d.h. während des ersten Studienjahrs, nachzuholen.

Für das Nachholen von Sprachkenntnissen als Studienvoraussetzung sieht die RahmenVO eine Verlängerung der Regelstudienzeit vor. Die entsprechenden Bestimmungen für den B.Ed. Englisch finden sich im Allgemeinen Teil der Studien- und Prüfungsordnung aufgeführt (§1 Abs. 8). Für den Erwerb des Latinums oder einer alten Fremdsprache ist eine Verlängerung der Regelstudienzeit um bis zu zwei Semester je Fremdsprache vorgesehen; für den Erwerb einer weiteren modernen Fremdsprache ist eine Verlängerung der Regelstudienzeit um zusammen bis zu zwei Semester vorgesehen.

Wenn Sie Ihre Regelstudienzeit verlängern und die von der Prüfungsordnung vorgesehenen Semester in Anspruch nehmen möchten/ müssen, stellen Sie bitte einen formlosen Antrag auf Fristverlängerung der Regelstudienzeit und richten diesen an die/ den Vorsitzende/ -n des Prüfungsausschusses der Philosophischen Fakultät. Über die Fristverlängerung entscheidet der Prüfungsausschuss.

Bitte beachten Sie: Ohne nachgewiesene Sprachkenntnisse können Sie Ihr Bachelorstudium nicht abschließen!

I am in my second semester. How do I know which courses I have to take?

As a general guideline, you can consult our detailed module table or the overviews in table format in the Module Handbook (cf. MHB B.Ed. English 2022, 4-5). The module table can be understood as a general recommendation of the course of studies in a three-year framework (Regelstudienzeit).

So, we recommend the following courses for the second semester:

  • the seminar "Oral Communication I" (3 ECTS) in the Basic Module Academic English (ENG_BE_1)
  • the lecture "Introduction to English Linguistics" (3 ECTS) in the Basic Module Linguistics (ENG_BE_3)
  • the lecture in the Advanced Module Literary Studies (2 ECTS), a lecture of your choice in the field of literary studies (ENG_BE_7)
  • the lecture and the tutorial "Introduction to Cultural Studies" (6 ECTS) in the Basic Module Cultural Studies (ENG_BE_8)

For your future studies, please keep in mind that admission to Advanced Modules requires the prior successful completion of the Basic Module in the respective area of study. For example, you may not proceed to the Advanced Module Academic English if you have not passed the Basic Module Academic English first.

Please also beware of the dates and deadlines for course registration on alma.

In general, the number of courses you want to and can take after the first semester also depends on the workload in your second subject or in the educational sciences (Bildungswissenschaften) and on whether or not you have to take additional courses in Latin or a second modern language to meet language requirements in English and/ or your other subject(s).

In the Module Handbook for the B.Ed. English, the curriculum is designed to be completed in six semesters. What happens if I do not finish my studies within the time frame of six semesters?

The six semesters equal the regular duration of studies (Regelstudienzeit). As the term implies, this is the regular period of time the average B.Ed. student needs to finish his or her studies. You are not required to complete your studies in six semesters. The regular duration of studies is important primarily for those students who receive financial funding during their studies (e.g. BAföG). Please keep in mind that you can apply for an extension of the regular duration (Antrag auf Verlängerung der Regelstudienzeit). The most common reason to be granted an extension is learning a language in order to meet the language requirements. There is no orientation exam (Orientierungsprüfung) or intermediate exam (Zwischenprüfung) in the B.Ed. English.

Please beware: There is a maximum amount of time to complete your studies in the B.Ed. and that is twelve semesters. You have to complete your studies by the end of your twelfth semester, otherwise you are not allowed to graduate (Verlust des Prüfungsanspruches).

This is the relevant passage from the Studien- und Prüfungsordnung Allgemeiner Teil for the Bachelor of Education:

"§ 8a Studienabschluss, Fristen Sämtliche nach der Studien-und Prüfungsordnung für den Studienabschluss im jeweiligen Studienbereich erforderlichen Studien- und Prüfungsleistungen müssen bis zum Ablauf des 12. Fachsemesters im jeweiligen Studienbereich erbracht sein. Wird diese Frist überschritten, geht der Prüfungsanspruch für das jeweilige Fach bzw. bei Überschreitung der Frist im Studienbereich Bildungswissenschaften für den Bachelor-Studiengang verloren, es sei denn, die Fristüberschreitung ist von der oder dem Studierenden nicht zu vertreten." (PO AT B.Ed. 2015)

How is the final grade in the subject English calculated?

The basis for the calculation of the final grade can be found in the special exam regulations (Besonderer Teil der Prüfungsordnung) in § 8 "Bildung der Abschlussnote im Fach Englisch" (cf. PO BT B.Ed. English § 5).

The final grade consists of the grades in the following modules weighted according to the respective numbers of credit points:

  • ENG_BE_2 Advanced Module Academic English (6 ECTS)
  • ENG_BE_5 Focus Module Linguistics (9 ECTS)
  • ENG_BE_7 Advanced Module Literary Studies (9 ECTS)
  • ENG_BE_9 Advanced Module Cultural Studies (9 ECTS)
  • ENG_BE_10 Basic Module Teaching English as a Foreign Language (6 ECTS)

Beginning of Studies after 2022

  • ENG_BE_2 Advanced Module Academic English (6 ECTS)
  • ENG_BE_5 Focus Module Linguistics (9 ECTS)

How is the final grade of the B.Ed. calculated?

The basis for the calculation of the final grade in the B.Ed. can be found in the general exam regulations (Allgemeiner Teil der Prüfungsordnung) in § 21 "Bildung der Bachelor-Gesamtnote" (cf. PO AT B.Ed. English § 5).

The final grade consists of the following grades in the specified percentage:

  • final grade of SUBJECT 1 (43 %)
  • final grade of SUBJECT 2 (43 %)
  • final grade in Bildungswissenschaften (9 %)
  • Bachelor thesis (5 %)

FAQ about the Bachelor Thesis

What do I need to know and do if I want to write my B.Ed. thesis in my major English?

The Bachelor thesis (6 ECTS) must be completed in one of your two subjects. In English, you can choose between different areas of study (cf. MHB B.Ed. English 2018, 16).

General Regulations

The general regulations for the Bachelor thesis are:

"§ 17 Bachelor-Arbeit (1) 1Die Bachelor-Arbeit ist eine Prüfungsarbeit, sie ist nach Wahl der bzw. des Studierenden in einem der im Rahmen des Bachelor-Studiengangs studierten Fächer zu erbringen. 2Sie soll zeigen, dass die Verfasserin bzw. der Verfasser in der Lage ist, innerhalb einer vorgegebenen Frist ein Problem selbständig nach wissenschaftlichen Methoden zu bearbeiten und die so gewonnenen Ergebnisse sachgerecht schriftlich darzustellen. 3Das Thema ist dem Bereich des gewählten Faches zu entnehmen; bei der Themenvergabe können fachdidaktische Aspekteberücksichtigt werden." (cf. PO AT 2018, 484)

"(2) 1Die Bearbeitungsfrist der Bachelor-Arbeit von der Ausgabe des Themas bis zur Abgabe der Arbeit beträgt 5 Wochen, das Thema ist so festzulegen und die Aufgabenstellung ist von der Betreuerin bzw. dem Betreuer so zu begrenzen, dass die Bachelor-Arbeit innerhalb dieser Frist angefertigt werden kann. 2Die Abgabefrist kann in begründeten Fällen auf Antrag vom Prüfungsausschuss des jeweiligen Faches verlängert werden." (cf. PO AT 2018, 484)

So, you have five weeks to complete your thesis. There is no fixed time period prescribed in the Module Handbook. You can write your thesis in the semester break or during the semester. You determine the time frame individually with your advisor.

How do you hand in your thesis?

These are the general rules:

"(3) 2Die fertige Bachelor-Arbeit ist innerhalb der Bearbeitungsfrist in einem gebundenen Exemplar beim Prüfungsausschuss des jeweiligen Fachs und zusätzlich dort in einem vom Prüfungsausschuss des jeweiligen Faches festgelegten Dateiformat einzureichen. 3Der Zeitpunkt der Abgabe ist aktenkundig zu machen. 4Die Bachelor-Arbeit kann neben einem ausgedruckten Text auch multimediale Teile auf elektronischen Datenträgern enthalten, sofern die Themenstellung dies erfordert." (cf. PO AT 2018, 484)

In general, at the English Department, the hard copy of your thesis has to be sent to your supervisor. The electronic copy has to be sent to the Registrar's Office. Please check back with your thesis supervisor regarding their preferences for submission.

Last but not least:

(4) Die Kandidatin oder der Kandidat hat der Bachelor-Arbeit eine persönlich unterzeichnete Erklärung beizufügen, in der sie bzw. er versichert,

  • dass sie bzw. er die Arbeit selbständig verfasst hat,-dass sie bzw. er keine anderen als die angegebenen Hilfsmittel und Quellen benutzt hat,
  • dass sie bzw. er alle wörtlich oder sinngemäß aus anderen Werken übernommenen Aussagen als solche gekennzeichnet hat,
  • ob die Arbeit vollständig oder in wesentlichen Teilen Gegenstand eines anderen Prüfungsverfahrens gewesen ist,
  • dass sie bzw. er die Arbeit weder vollständig noch in wesentlichen Teilen bereits veröffentlicht hat, und
  • dass das in Dateiform eingereichte Exemplar mit dem eingereichten gebundenen Exemplar übereinstimmt." (cf. PO AT 2018, 484-5)

Regulations in the Subject English

The B.Ed. thesis should be of approximately 25 pages of length. The general style guidelines of writing academic papers at the English Department as far as formatting and bibliographic references are concerned apply. You should, however, always consult your advisor about his or her individual preferences. There are no general standards at the English Department, especially with regard to the different areas of study (e.g. linguistics, literary/cultural studies, etc.). Therefore, please always ask your advisor about the requirements and the required formatting of your thesis (font size, spacing, etc.).

Steps of the Process towards Registering for Your Bachelor Thesis

In general, you should first contact your (potential) advisor and talk to them about your ideas and plans, your topic, your problems, etc. In general, all full professors are eligible as advisors for Bachelor theses. In addition, associate professors and research assistants with a Ph.D. also qualify as advisors. If you have a research fellow as a potential advisor in mind who does not hold a Ph.D., please talk to them directly. There is still the possibility that they may serve as your thesis advisor.

After the initial feedback from your advisor, you should negotiate the time frame with your advisor. Your advisor has to state the beginning and the end of the five-week period on the forms of the Registrar's Office. Only after you have discussed all the details with your advisor should you officially register for the Bachelor thesis at the Registrar's Office (Prüfungsamt). In English, you can write your thesis in the following areas of study:

  • Linguistics
  • Literary Studies (English Literatures and Cultures and American Studies)
  • Cultural Studies (English Literatures and Cultures and American Studies)
  • Teaching English as a Foreign Language

Please keep in mind: Registration for the Bachelor thesis at the Registrar's Office is only possible if you have completed the highest module in the area of study that you choose for your Bachelor thesis. In other words: You must have completed (i.e. the grades already have to be entered in alma)

The Registrar's Office has a step-by-step guide that gives you an overview of how to prepare the registration for your Bachelor thesis (from finding an appropriate advisor, applying for the Bachelor thesis, and getting the signature from your advisor on the correct form to submitting your thesis).

FAQ about the Options during/ after Graduation

I'm in my last semester in the B.Ed. and I only have very few courses and exams left in the B.Ed. English. Is it possible to already take courses from the M.Ed. English and to get credit for these courses after I have transferred to the M.Ed.?

In general, it is possible to take courses while you are still enrolled in the B.Ed. However, you should keep in mind that this is only possible during your last semester(s) in the B.Ed., i.e. after you have already earned the majority of ECTS in your B.Ed., and not before.

The following M.Ed. modules cannot be taken while you are still enrolled in the B.Ed.:

  • ENG_ME_3 Colloquium and Independent Study Module
  • ENG_ME_4 Teaching English as a Foreign Language M.Ed. Module
  • ENG_ME_5 Master Thesis

You also have to keep in mind, that grades and ECTS cannot be entered into alma because you are not enrolled in the M.Ed. yet. Our recommendation is for you to tell your instructors that you are still a B.Ed. student and that they should not enter the grades or send the grades to the Registrar's Office until you have transferred to the M.Ed.
