SS: Introduction to applied Geophysics (BSc)
This course provides a broad overview in applied geophysics with a focus on the most common sub-surface imaging techniques: gravimetry, magnetics, geoelectrics, electromagnetic induction, ground-penetrating radar and seismics. We will discuss applications in industry as well as for general scientific questions in the geo- and environmental sciences. You will get a broad overview for a number of geophysical methods imaging the sub-surface. You will understand the underlying physical principles, which will enable you to go deeper into specific methods that you may encounter later on. Most importantly you should learn to think straightforwardly, to ask the right questions, and to apply quantitative mathematical methods in problem solving.
SS: Digital Geology - Active Tectonics in the Italian Apennines (MSc, Mapping Course)
This is a mapping course in the Italien Apenninnes on active tectonics and Earth’s surface processes using a variety of field based and instrumental methods (geomorphic mapping, seismics, radar, electrics, laser scanning, drones).
SS: Ergänzungsstunde zur Experimentalphysik für die Geo- und Umweltwissenschaften
Taking the experimental physics lecture is mandatory across all of our BSc programs. Sometimes you may wonder why this is useful. Here we cover selected examples were we apply the concepts taught in the entry level physics class to geo- and environmentally relevant problems.
WS: Advanced Geophysics (MSc)
This course takes selected geophysical techniques for imaging the sub-surface (e.g., seismics, ground-penetrating radar, electrics, ...) and treats those methods in detail. This may include the full chain of a geophysical survey including planning & profile selection, data acquisition, and data processing including signal inversion. The lecture format is flexible and switches between joint teaching of underlying geophysical concepts and applied problem solving exercises. Programming in Python and/or Matlab will be used.
WS: Introduction to scientific programming with Python (MSc)
Python has emerged as an important programming language for many applications in geo- and environmental sciences. In this course we provide a primer to get you going for quantitative data analysis in other lectures and/or your MSc project.
