Diversity is of central importance to us as an international research community in machine learning: It opens up new perspectives, strengthens the innovative capacity of our research, and makes the Cluster a place where talented individuals from all over the world feel welcome and valued. Excellent research can only emerge in an environment that brings together diverse perspectives—and only in this way can we develop research questions that meet the needs of a diverse society.
The published by the Klaus Tschira Foundation in early 2026 provides, for the first time, a broad empirical basis for diversity in the German STEM research landscape. In doing so, it draws attention to a diversity data gap: diversity-related data are still rarely collected in a systematic way, making it difficult to design targeted measures. We are committed to closing this gap in our own field as effectively as possible.
