*This handbook is a milestone of the project Taiwan as Pioneer 1 which is an interdisciplinary and supra-regional postdoctoral joint project to promote structural strengthening and networking of Taiwan research in Sinology in Germany. The focus of the research is on Taiwan;s role as an innovator in the dynamics of global megatrends.

Because of Taiwan’s particular geopolitical location and sociocultural context, scholars have mobilized various methods to analyze the different phenomena that we find at the heart of Taiwanese studies. This handbook aims to give visibility to methodological aspects in the social sciences and humanities in research on Taiwan and/or being conducted through the building of relationships with people who identify as Taiwanese and/or live in Taiwan.

The purposes of the handbook are twofold: 1) to give scholars and all level students, with methodological, interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary insights to study Taiwan and 2) to showcase innovative methodologies and new perspectives in Taiwan studies, underscoring its diversity and relevance to established and emerging fields. We envisage that this handbook will be appealing and accessible to a broad readership and will be used both for teaching in Taiwan Studies courses and research purposes.

We also anticipate that the readership will include non-specialists in Taiwan studies, who may wish to draw on case studies in this field for their research and teaching.

The editors of this handbook welcome contributions that engage with a broad range of methods - quantitative (statistics, big data, database, etc.) and qualitative (ethnography, interviews, archives, text analysis, etc.). We invite submissions that primarily have a reflexive focus on innovative methodologies and new perspectives on Taiwan studies.

Timeline
Abstracts and working titles will be required by 30 October 2023, and authors will be notified of the editors’ decision by 30 November 2023. If you would like to author a chapter for this submission, please send an abstract of 300 words and your CV to amelie.keyser-verreault@uni-tuebingen.de with the subject line Handbook and your name. Full chapters, due by 30 March 2024, should have a maximum length of 8,000 words, including titles, tables, notes and bibliography, etc.
