Polysialic acid is a cellular receptor for human adenovirus

Receptor for adenovirus could be useful in cancer therapy

In collaboration with investigators from Umea University in Sweden and the Imperial College in London, IFIB researchers have shown that polysialic acid functions as a specific cellular receptor for a human adenovirus. Since polysialic acid can be found in high expression levels in brain and lung cancers where its presence is associated with poor prognosis, the findings provide a useful platform for the design of adenovirus-based vectors for gene therapy of these cancers.
