Als ubiquitäres Phänomen spielt Intertextualität in allen Projekten der Arbeitsgruppe eine Rolle.
Die griechische und römische Literatur der Antike von Homer bis Boethius ist in einem hohen Maß von Intertextualitätsphänomenen geprägt. Catulls Dichtung gewinnt ihren vollen Reiz erst durch die Synopse mit zentralen griechische Referenztexten wie Kallimachos und Sappho. Die ersten Worte von Vergils Aeneis (arma virumque cano, 1.1) zitieren gleich im ersten Vers die beiden homerischen Epen Ilias (arma) und Odyssee (virum) an und verorten sich dadurch in eine übergreifende Tradition epischer Dichtung. Auch innerhalb ein und desselben Werkes können sich Werkteile aufeinander beziehen, so z.B. die beiden basia-Gedichte Catulls (carm. 5 und 7).
Wenn sich ein Text auf sich selbst bezieht, spricht man von Autotextualität, von Intratextualität, wenn sich ein Text auf einen anderen Text desselben Autors bezieht, von Intertextualität, wenn sich ein Text auf einen 'fremden' Prätext eines anderen Autors bezieht. Dabei gibt es graduell unterschiedliche Ausprägungen (Einzeltextreferenz, Textketten und Systemreferenz). Zur Gruppe der Systemreferenz gehört auch die Referenz auf Mythen und Archetypen (z. B. die Verarbeitung zentraler Mythen wie dem Medea- oder dem Ödipus-Mythos, auch dann, wenn eindeutige intertextuelle Bezüge auf einen bestimmten Prätext wie das euripideische bzw. sophokleische Drama nicht gegeben sind).
