Admission to the Master's programme "Peace Research and International Relations" is open to students with a higher education entrance qualification who have passed the BA examination or an equivalent examination in Political Science, International Relations or a related subject with a grade of at least "good" according to the German grading system (2.5, upper second class or equivalent). Final grades of international applicants will be converted into the German grading system. Please note that we as the academic advisory team are not in a position to provide accurate information regarding the recognition of international degrees in Germany. These matters are handled by our central Student Affairs Office (Advising and Admission of International Students) who can provide information about the recognition of specific degrees as well as grade conversion.

It is recommended that applicants have achieved at least 60 ECTS in Political Science during their Bachelor’s studies. If your Bachelor’s degree is not in Political and/or Social Sciences and/or International Relations, your Transcript of Records should indicate the required amount of ECTS.

Successful applications are selected on the basis of their B.A. degree grade, internships or other professional activities in a field related to peace research or international relations, as well as awards for academic or any other subject-related achievements.

Moreover, applicants have to provide proof of their knowledge of English at the level of B2/C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

During the application process you will be asked to upload the following documents. Please make sure that you have them at hand to successfully complete your application.

• Bachelor's Degree Certificate (in German or English)*
• Complete Transcript of Records with a final grade or calculated grade average (in German or English)*
• CV in tabular format (in English)
• Motivational Letter (1-2 pages, in English)
• Proof of English Language Qualification (for all applicants whose first language is not English)

It is not a problem if you do not yet have your Bachelor's degree certificate at the time of application. In this case, please submit a current Transcript of Records, stating your current average grade as well. Please note that your Transcript of Records should show that you will have completed your Bachelor's degree by the end of the summer semester, so all completed courses should really be entered.

Please note that you must also submit a certified copy of your school leaving certificate to the university if your application is successful.

* If your original document is in another language, you must submit an official translation (by your university or an official translator). If this is not possible by the application deadline, you can upload your original document together with a statement that you will submit the official translation as soon as possible. You can then still submit the translation after the deadline. Please note: no admissions can be granted without the official translation of your documents being available! So try to actually submit the translation as soon as possible.

Successful completion of the Master's programme “Peace Research and International Relations” presupposes a good working knowledge of English. Therefore, students have to provide proof of their knowledge of English at the level of Level B2/C1 or equivalent according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

As proof are accepted:

• TOEFL ibt: 79 (test center version or home edition)
• TOEFL pbt: 550
• IELTS: 6.5 (overall band)
• Cambridge English Scale 176
• UNIcert® III foreign language certificate
• German HZB (e.g. Abiturzeugnis, Fachhochschulreife) that states the grade for a regular subject English, which has been taken at least since year 7. The last grade or score must be at least "good".
• A certified secondary school degree obtained in English and in a country whose official language (or one of its official languages) is English.
• A certified university degree of at least three years’ study duration where the language of studies has been English.

For German and EU/EEA students

Students from Germany and other EU/EEA member states have to pay a semester fee of 166.80 euros (winter semester 2019/20).

Students seeking a second degree (e.g. studying a second master's degree) are charged an additional fee of 650.00 euros per semester (winter semester 2019/20).

International students (from non-EU/EEA member states) will be charged a tuition fee of 1.500 euros per semester (winter semester 2019/20). This is in addition to the general semester fees of 166.80 euros per semester (winter semester 2019/20).
