Solar Orbiter and the dark side of the sun

Daniel Maier, CEA, Saclay - 17.12.18

Abstract:

Solar Orbiter, the next planned solar satellite mission, aims to observe our nearest star in unprecedented details. In this talk, I will present the challenging instrumental concepts that had to be designed in order to construct an observatory which is closer to the sun than any observatory before, as well as the revealing new science that can be performed with it. After a general introduction into the different instruments onboard Solar Orbiter I will focus on the design and its related science of the STIX instrument which is based on a CdTe imaging X-ray spectrometer that was designed at CEA, Saclay.
