Rudolf Bultmann (1884-1976), a Protestant theologian, was one of the most important New Testament scholars of the 20th century. He taught New Testament in Breslau from 1916, in Gießen from 1920, and in Marburg from 1921. Bultmann put his theological work under the broad horizon of "faith and understanding" (the programmatic title of his four-volume collection of essays). A special concern of his was the connection of exegesis with systematic-theological and philosophical questions. Coming from liberal theology, Bultmann approached dialectical theology early on. However, for him theology and anthropology could not be separated from each other; according to Bultmann, the Christian faith is always connected with the human understanding of existence.
