History studies past human lifeworlds and examines their temporal transformation. In doing so, it examines the political, economic, social, cultural, and ecological causes and conditions for historical change — but also continuities.

In Tübingen, the subject is divided into seven departments/institutes: four departments are divided according to the periods antiquity, the Middle Ages, modern era und contemporary history. In addition, the Institute for History Didactics and Public History, the Institute for Historical Area Studies and Auxiliary Sciences, and the Institute for Eastern European History and Area Studies offer further approaches to history.
