The projects purpose is the detailed documentation and study, both digitally and in print, of the Roman sculptures and monuments of the Reiss-Engelhorn Museum in Mannheim. The collection consists of ca. 120 items of Roman gravestones, votive reliefs, mile stones, architectural fragments, and incriptions which have thus far only been selectively published. Approximately the half of the collection’s inventory comes from the Rhein-Neckar region that in Roman times belonged to the civitas Ulpia Sueborum Nicrensium. The other half is part of the collection of Kurfürst Carl Theodor and was, in the 18th century, acquired from several parts of Germany by Carl Theodor himself and various antiquarian institutions.
The project is carried out in collaboration with Institute for Ancient History, University of Heidelberg (Christian Witschel), the Reiss-Engelhorn Museum (Michael Tellenbach) the Mannheimer Altertumsverein (Hermann Wiegand).
