Application Process and Admission Requirements

You have an undergraduate degree

• in Political Science or
• in another social science with a minor in Political Science or
• in European Studies, provided this program included Political Science courses.
• You have an undergraduate average of at least "good" (2.5 or better, or 3.0 or better on a 4.0 scale).

If you are an out-of-country applicant and you did not earn your university qualifications at a German-speaking institute, you must demonstrate adequate German language abilities. There are various options for providing this evidence:

Through an adequate Language Certificate

• The “Test of German-Language Ability for University Admission” ("Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang", DHS) with a total score of at least DSH-2;
• The “Test of German as a Foreign Language” (“Test Deutsch als Fremdsprache”, TestDaF), with at least a Level 4 score in all test sections;
• The “German Section” of the assessment test at a Studienkolleg (prepatory college);
• The “German Language Diploma of the Conference of State Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs” (“Deutsche Sprachdiplom der Kultusministerkonferenz”, DSD), – Level II or Level C1 (DSD II or DSD C1);
• Certificate confirming a passing score on the “Central Advanced Language Test” (“Zentrale Oberstufenprüfung”, ZOP);
• The minor or major German Language Diploma from the Goethe Institute (“Kleine Deutsche Sprachdiplom”, KDS or “Große Deutsche Sprachdiplom”, GDS);
• The German Language Exam II (“Deutsche Sprachprüfung II“) from the Sprachen- und Dolmetscher-Instituts München.

Through one of the following accredited secondary school qualifications

• The German certificate in the French Diplôme du Baccalauréat, which is earned after attending a bilingual German-French department of a secondary school/high school;
• The US Advanced Placement Test (AP Test) in German;
• The Certificate of Completion of the upper level of secondary instruction from the German-speaking region of the Kingdom of Belgium;
• The Secondary School Completion Certificate from the Grand Duchy of Luxemburg;
• Diploma of completion of secondary schooling with German as the instruction language in the autonomous province of Bolzano-South Tyrol;
• The Certificate of Completion of the international section “German language” on the LiceoGimnasiale "Luigi Galvani" in Bologna;
• The Certificate of Completion of a German-Irish bilingual Leaving Certificate at the German School in Dublin, St. Kilian’s;
• The Certificate of the Polish Matura, that concludes with a bilingual German examination in the German section;
• The Liechtenstein Matura, which is also recognized as evidence that the applicant possesses adequate knowledge of the German language.

There are various possibilities for providing proof of your English language abilities. Which option you choose for demonstrating your English abilities will not affect your application.

Through a Certificate or Attestation

• B2- Level Certificate according to the Common European Framework of Reference or the equivalent.
• Proof of participation in courses in English that are recognized by the responsible department as equivalent to the B2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference.
• A written attestation from the supervising department that confirms that you have acquired the required language skills outside of school or university.

Through your first degree

• If your first university degree was earned at an English-speaking university.

The following documents must be included in your application:

1. Certificate of higher education entrance qualification (Hochschulzugangsberechtigung - HZB), Certificate of relevant, subject-specific higher education entrance qualification or a certificate of higher education entrance qualification from another country that is recognized as equivalent to the German HZB by the appropriate government authority in the form of an officially notarized transcript or an officially notarized copy.
    
2. Certificate of completion of a basic degree program in Political Science or in another social science with a minor in political science, or a degree in European Studies, provided this program included relevant Political Science courses.
   If you do not have this certificate at the time of application, you can prove that you fulfill the admission requirements by the beginning of the post-graduate degree program based on the progression of your studies and especially on your examination grades/credit points earned up to the submission of your application. If this is not possible by the deadline, your application will be voided.
    
3. Certificates demonstrating your language skills (see below).
    
4. A tabular listing (resume) of your academic and professional record to date. You should highlight your most significant achievements and experiences here (e.g. relevant career or other practical experience, prizes and awards for qualification works or other academic texts or publications), as these qualifications are considered in the selection process.
    
5. An essay of no more than two pages explaining why you are applying for this Master's program.
