Fall School 2027: Leading Expert Larry Hedges Teaches Young Researchers the Methodology of Field Experiments
Experiments are considered the gold standard of science. Unlike any other scientific method, they are capable of supporting causal conclusions or demonstrating the effectiveness of interventions. In educational research, field studies—for example, those conducted directly in real-world school settings—are particularly important for meaningful application.
Experimental studies in real-world (school) settings are key areas of focus at both the Hector Institute for Empirical Educational Research and the LEAD Research Network. As a result, Tübingen has become a leading center for field experiments in educational research. In addition to conducting their own studies, the Hector Institute and the LEAD Research Network are committed to strengthening and promoting this methodology.
We are therefore particularly proud that the leading U.S. methodologist Larry Hedges led our one-week Case School titled “Planning, Power, and Analysis of Cluster-Randomized Controlled Trials in Education” from September 14 to 18 in Tübingen to train 33 early-career researchers in conducting their own field experiments. The training focuses on identifying the strongest research design for one’s own context and planning the necessary sample sizes for various parts of the study. Building on this, the analysis strategy for the data generated in the study is developed. Professor Larry Hedges is one of the world’s most outstanding instructors in this field. In the United States, in addition to conducting numerous field experiments and publishing methodological papers, he has played a leading role in establishing national standards for experimental studies and helped build the National Institute for Education Sciences.
