Exam Registration

  • Exam registration (Prüfungsanmeldung) is mandatory in order to receive credits. Students do not receive course credits by enrolling in a course. They must register for an exam linked to the course.
  • Sudents can only register during the official registration period.
  • In alma the term "examination" covers graded exams (Prüfungen) as well as ungraded exams (Studienleistungen) for which a pass/fail assessment will be posted. This means that students need to register for both: for graded and ungraded exams to receive full credits for the module. This is also true for joint exams where the course content of the ungraded exam (usually a lecture) is also covered in the exam of the graded course (usually a seminar).
  • Students can only receive credits for courses in those modules to which the course has been assigned.
  • Students must sign off an exam if they cannot take it. See details below.

During the exam registration period an Apply-button will appear next to each exam element (graded and ungraded)

The basic procedure is consistent throughout:

  1. Select the exam element for which you wish to receive credits.
  2. Click on Apply and accept the legal terms.
  3. Select the course that you attended and where you will take the exam.
  4. Click on Apply next to the course of your choice. Once you have applied, you are automatically admitted to the exam.

After clicking on Apply and accepting the legal terms, you will see one or more courses for which you can receive credits for this particular exam in the chosen module. The screenshot below displays the case where only one course is assigned to this exam. By clicking on Apply you have registered for this exam and you are automatically admitted.

The status of admission is shown and you can go back to the overview.

In many cases, more than one course is linked to one exam. The actual procedure to register for the exam is the same as explained above, but you need to select the course for which you want to take the exam.

 Special Cases

►  The same course is linked to two different exams

Normally there is a 1:1 relation between exams and courses. That means you can only register for one exam per course. In rare cases, however, a course is linked to two different exams and you need to register for both exams to receive full credits for the module. Examples:
American Studies Master (version 2015):

  • Modules 02 and 04 where the course consists of the seminar (exam 2504 or 3504) and an accompanying workgroup (exam 2508 or 3508)
  • Module 06 (Research I) where the course consists of colloquium (exam 4504) and the research project (exam 4508).

American Studies Master (version 2022):

  • Module 03 where the course consists of the seminar (exam AMS-MA 03-1) and Independent Studies (exam AMS-MA 03-2)
  • Module 07 (Academic Skills) where the course consists of the Research Colloquium (exam AMS-MA 07-1) and the Research Project (exam AMS-MA 07-2)

► The same course is linked twice to the same exam

In the list of courses linked to an exam each course appears twice. On a closer look you will find that they differ in the examination form. Usually, the module handbook will explain the options. Example:
Bachelor of Education English (version 2015 and 2022)

  • Advanced Modules Literary Studies and Cultural Studies. In the lists linked to the seminar exam the courses will appear twice, one with the examination form oral and one with the exam form Hausarbeit (term paper). The module handbook explains that you cannot choose the same exam form in both modules, you need to have one oral exam and one term paper exam.

Signing off or Changing Selection

During the exam registration period students can sign off an exam (abmelden) or change the selection (ummelden) if they so wish.
You need to sign off an exam if you cannot take it in that semester. Changing selection is necessary if you wish to get credits for the same exam, but linked to another course or for the same course, but in another module.

Once you have successfully registered for an exam, the Apply-button on the planner overview will have changed into a Sign-off button. When you  click on it, the registration window will show a Sign-off button next to the course for which you have registered. By clicking on it, you will have deregistered and the system confirms it by turning into a Not enrolled label.

If more than one course is linked to an exam, there will be a Sign off button next to the course for which you have registered the exam and a Change Selection button next to all other courses. You will need to sign off first, before you can change the selection. After the change, the course that you signed off will have a Not enrolled label and the course that you registered will have an admission label. See screenshot.

  • You will not be able to register for an exam for which you have successfully applied in a previous semester, but not taken the exam. This is why it is important to sign off an exam if you cannot take it.
  • You will not be able to register for an exam linked to a course in more than one module.
