The American Studies Department enjoys close relationships with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, University of Maryland and Tufts University. Our special exchange agreements with these universities enable many of our Interdisciplinary American Studies students to study in the U.S. We are also proud to announce that we can offer a limited number of DAAD scholarships every year for students who want to take this opportunity.

University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, NC (UNC)

UNC’s interdisciplinary American Studies program offers valuable insights into the nation's complexity by engaging a variety of perspectives. Key topics include American Expressive Culture, American Intellectual and Cultural History, Southern Studies, American Indian Studies, Folklore and Folklife, Digital Humanities, and International and Comparative American Studies. A special focus of UNC lies in Folklore and American Indian Studies. Chapel Hill is particularly suitable for students seeking to deepen their cultural studies focus with ethnographic work.

Tufts University near Boston, MA

Tufts offers an American Studies program with the following interdisciplinary clusters: Community Based Studies, Comparative Race and Ethnicity, Health, Environment and Society, Institutions and Power in the U.S., Issues in U.S. Education, Representation and Performance in the Arts and Humanities. Tufts University is particularly suitable for students seeking to deepen their political science focus.

University of Maryland at College Park, MD (UMD)

UMD offers an American Studies program conceived from the ground up as an interdisciplinary program, combing the fields of Sociology, Government, U.S. History, and American Literature in order to focus on the two broad themes of social construction of difference and cultures of everyday life.
In addition, UMD offers two special interdisciplinary programs focusing on Latino/a studies and the study of native people of the Americas. UMD is recommended for students seeking to deepen their literary studies and postcolonial studies focuses.
