Research interests

  • Subsistence of Pleistocene hunter-gatherers in Europe
  • Palaeoecology of Pleistocene bears
  • Exploitation of organic raw material, organic artefacts
  • Earliest music, bone flutes, music archaeology

Susanne C. Münzel is a post-doctoral researcher in archaeozoology at the University of Tübingen, where she earned her doctorate degree with a thesis on Umingmak, a Palaeoeskimo site situated on Banks Island, North-West-Territories, Canada. Since 1990 her research focuses primarily on the Palaeolithic fauna of the Swabian Jura and has been awarded several grants from the German Research Foundation (DFG). Her work explores numerous aspects of human subsistence practices in the Middle and Upper Palaeolithic of Southwestern Germany. In recent years, her research has brought new insights on cave bear hunting and ecology through an interdisciplinary collaboration with colleagues at Tübingen and elsewhere involving isotopic, genetic and microwear studies. Another area which her work has touched upon is that of organic tool technology, as exemplified by the organization of a series of workshops on proboscidean rib tools, her interest in retouchers and organic tools in general. In this regard, one of the highlights of her work is the discovery of the first Palaeolithic bone flute from the Swabian Jura among the faunal remains of Geißenklösterle. Such an extraordinary finding led her to start important collaborations with experts in the field of music archaeology, with whom she is involved in ongoing projects.
