Folder for the exhibiotion "Aufmacher"

Duration 2013 - 2016

The third-party funded project "MAM|MUT" is a cooperation between LUI and the Museum of the University of Tübingen. It pursues two long-term goals: first, the digitization and indexing of university collections with the help of a museum database and second, the conception of exhibitions from the scientifically indexed holdings. In the first year of the project, the collection of historical journals from the Archive of Everyday Culture of the LUI Collection will be inventoried and presented in an exhibition.

Subproject “Aufmacher”

From 12.7.- 28.9. the special exhibition "Aufmacher. Title Stories of German Magazines" presented exciting headlines of the 20th century and takes a look behind the scenes of well-known mass media.
Attracting attention and arousing interest are the two most important tasks of an opener. Magazines use these sensational eye-catchers to increase the curiosity of potential buyers. Be it scandalous pictures, motivating slogans or emotional snapshots of current events: Leaders have an effect. Whether Spiegel, Stern, Brigitte, Burda or Bravo, they all have a direct connection to current events.
On display was a selection from over 100 openers, most of which come from the journal collection of the Ludwig Uhland Institute and were supplemented by loans and purchases. Visitors also had the opportunity to use an audio guide. Headphones were used to explain the stories and visual rhetorical strategies behind the individual title pages. In addition, interviews with editors-in-chief, collectors and readers in the media area and a reading corner invited visitors to a more in-depth discussion of the topic.
