Our People and What They do

Frederik Allstädt

My PhD research at University of Heidelberg aims to decipher the paleoclimatic dynamics during the late Pliocene and early Pleistocene based on an ICDP drill core from Paleolake Idaho, western USA. I am currently developing a magnetostratigraphy for the core in close collaboration with Prof. Erwin Appel and Dr. Wolfgang Rösler (University of Tübingen) and Dr. Alexander Prokopenko (University of Cologne). Subsequently, I will carry out climate and vegetation reconstructions based on the analyses of pollen and spores from the core material.

Prof. Dr. Erwin Appel

Group leader of the geophysical research team - during the early stage of my career I focused on fundamentals of rock magnetic properties and processes such as domain structures, now I'm using this expertise for studies on tectonics, paleoclimate, and environmental pollution.

Sven Dannemenn

Within my master thesis, I am working on Paleogene sediments of the western Tethyan Himalaya. In order to determine paleolatitudes of the northern margin of the Indian Plate before India/Asia collision, paleomagnetic directions have to be measured. Within this project I can combine scientific work with my personal interests in mountain ranges and their formations.

Mohammadreza Ershadi

I am working on shallow subsurface investigation with Seismic and Geoelectric methods. My master thesis project is about comparison and combination of Seismic Refraction Tomography (SRT) and Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT) to evaluate and characterize a shallow aquifer (Lauswiesen site).

Dr. Wenxia Han

My research focuses on geochemical study of lake sediments contains elements, carbon and oxygen isotopes of sediments, and boron-chloride isotopes from salt layers. I am now working on data analysis of multi-proxy records from long drilling core from Tibetan Plateau.

Dr. Wolfgang Rösler

I am interested in palaeo- rock- archaeo- and environmental magnetism. My Diploma and PhD work was on Neogene magnetostratigraphy in the Nepalese Siwaliks. Since then, I have been working on a wide range of applications of geophysical methods in geoscience, archaeology, and environmental screening.

Verena Verestek

My research focuses on reconstructing Middle Miocene climate dynamics in Central Asia using paleomagnetism. I use lacustrine sediments from Middle Miocene successions in the Ili Basin (Southeast Kazakhstan) to develop a magnetostratigraphy and to generate magnetic proxy records.

Qi Zhang

My research focuses on Low-temperature oxidation of magnetite in rock weathering. Therefore, samples with different weathering degree were chosen. Subsequently, their magnetic mineralogy and stoichiometry will be analyzed.

Dr. Pan Zhao

I am a Humboldt post-doc fellow. My research focuses on the tectonic evolution of the Mongol-Okhotsk Ocean and reconstruction of the Northeastern Asia. I apply paleomagnetism on the Late Paleozoic to Mesozoic sediments in Mongolia, Russian Far East and northeastern China to study the evolution of the Mongol-Okhotsk Ocean, and finally make a reconstruction of the Northeastern Asia.
