Important aspects of Ph.D. supervision by Prof. Dr. Hans-Jürgen Bieling
Considering specific working and living backgrounds and individual career planning, different paths can lead to a Ph. D. If you want to do a doctorate, you should keep in mind the following:
- Firstly, you should choose a Ph. D. topic within the range of the chair's working focuses (International Political Economy, European integration, state, political and social theory) or one that is at least connected to them.
- Secondly, you should send me a curriculum vitae and an exposé (5-10 pages) including your research question, your working hypothesis, theoretical perspective and research methods as well as a preliminary outline and working plan. Based on this, we can discuss your Ph. D. project in more detail.
- Thirdly, for me, a close cooperation is important. This should include regular contact and exchange about the progress of your Ph.D. During the lecture periods, this mainly happens in the research colloquium in Tübingen. In the semester breaks, there are one-day workshops for Ph.D students to discuss their progress.
- Fourthly, acceptance as a Ph. D. student by the faculty presupposes a good or very good (1.0 – 2.0; German marks, that is, distinction or merit) final degree (MA or equivalent) in political science or a closely related subject.
