MC-ICP-MS

The ThermoScientific Neptune Plus MC-ICP-MS at the isotope geochemistry laboratory is mainly used for non-traditional stable isotope ratio measurements of  Cr, Fe, Zn, Se, Mo and W. The optional Aridus II and Aridus III desolvation sample uptake systems allow accurate isotope ratio determinations of very low analyte concentrations.

Solution ICP-MS

Solution analyses are carried out using an iCAP Qc ICP-MS (www.thermoscientific.com). This quadrupole ICP-MS instrument is used for trace element concentration analysis on bulk sample solutions. If only low sample quantities are available as for example in drillcores, major elements are also obtained.

  • The iCAP Qc quadrupole ICP-MS is just below the capacity limit by internal analyses requirements. Therefore collaborational research and commercial analyses can only be carried out in exceptional cases.

TIMS

The Finnigan MAT262 is mainly used for standard Sr and Nd isotope (IC and ID) measurements. It allows simultaneous detection of up to 8 ion beams with 7 movable and 1 fixed central Faraday detectors. For low signal detection one SEM (secondary electron multiplier) is installed. The Finnigan MAT 262 is up-graded with Spectromat’s (www.spectromat.de) RunIt software, QHV 2 ion source supply, Power Control Unit PCU and filament current supply unit. Fully automated Sr and Nd isotope measurement is possible.

Gas IR Mass Spectrometry

For measurement of stable isotope ratios of light elements (HNCOS) a conventional Gas-IRMS, Thermo Finnigan Delta Plus XL is available. It is equipped with a CF-EA for CNS bulk isotope analyses and a CF-TC-EA for O in phosphates. Also connected is a Gasbench II device for isotope analyses of C and O on carbonates. Analyses of stable 13/12C and 18/16O ratios on carbonates, and stable 13/12C and 15/14N ratios on organic matter are offered on a commercial basis.

CRDS Spectroscopy

A new state of the art CRDS technique exists since 2016, using a Picarro 2130i that allows precise and simultaneous stable stable D and 18/16O isotope analyses on fresh water samples.

XRF

A wavelength dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometer Bruker AXS S4 Pioneer delivers measurements of 10 major elements + LOI and - upon request only – also up to 10 trace elements (Ba, Co, Cr, Ni, Rb, Sr, V, Y, Zn, Zr) on fused beads of geological materials using a calibration with 35 international rock standards. An additional “standardless” analysis software package allows for the determination of the chemical composition of completely unknown materials.
