Project
The Grotte de la Verpillière I by Germolles is a key site for the Palaeolithic of southern Burgundy and of great historical interest for the field. It was on its assemblages that the transition from the Middle to Upper Palaeolithic was investigated early on, and archaeological taxonomies still in use today were first described. However, postdepositional processes and old excavation activity have disturbed large parts of the formerly intact stratigraphy of the cave and the area in front of it. The aim of the current project is the analysis of excavations conducted by the working group for Early Prehistory and Quaternary Ecology under the direction of Prof. Harald Floss, between 2006 and 2016. The stratigraphic observations from the excavations and geoarchaeological results of the analysis of micromorphological samples are synthesized into a model of the formation processes that have affected the site in the past. This will allow the correlation of the over 20 intact remnants of intact sediment from the site. The archaeological remains from these reconstructed layers can then be treated as Assemblages for a lithic analysis and comprehensive absolute Dating. The chronological resolution and typo-technological features of the assemblages will then serve as a basis for regional and supra-regional comparisons. They will also be the basis for further analysis of the disturbed material in the hope, that the intact Assemblages can help to recontextualize decontextualized Artefacts. Central research questions will revolve around the placement of the Keilmesser phenomenon in the local Middle Palaeolithic framework, the internal variability and chronostratigraphy of the Aurignacian and the behavioral width and the makers of the Châtelperronian.
