I am interested in AEG, but am I qualified?

The program is designed for participants with training in natural sciences or engineering who want to acquire a well-founded scientific knowledge to be able to approach environmental problems from a multi-disciplinary angle and gain an internationally recognized high level of qualification.

Admission requirements are:

  • Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in Geosciences, Geoecology, Environmental Science, Geophysics, Mineralogy, Physical Geography, Soil Science, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Computer Sciences, Civil Engineering or a field related to environmental sciences with an overall grade (CGPA) equivalent to or better than 2,5 German grading system
  • solid knowledge of mathematics, chemistry, physics (i.e. courses must be included in the Bachelor's curriculum) and geosciences
  • English language proficiency equivalent to CEFR level B2 (e.g. TOEFL 79 iBT, IELTS 6.5; a German Hochschul­zugangsberechtigung (Abitur) with B2 confirmation; a Bachelor's degree from a university in either Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, UK or USA)

Note:   - German language proficiency is not required as the AEG program is taught completely in English.
            - You don't need to have completed your Bachelor's degree, you can also apply if you will graduate before October.

How do I get a place in the program?

Admission to the AEG program is competitive. The study places available per year are awarded according to qualifications and experience.

Do I need any German language qualification?
No, the program is completely taught in English.

Are there any course fees?
Registration fee: ca. 200 €/semester
Tuition fees for non-EU citizens: 1500 €/semester
Contribution to excursion costs: approx. 300 € for the program

Are there any scholarships available?
Unfortunately the University of Tübingen and the AEG program cannot offer any financial support to students!

In order to be considered for a scholar­ship some organizations require a letter from the University. We can send you this only after you have completed the online application procedure.

What is about accommodation?
As it is difficult to find accommodation on the private market we recommend to apply for student housing.

Application Procedure

To apply for the AEG program please follow the online application procedure on the University's website.
The application portal will open in early February. Application deadline for the program is 30th April.

For the application the following documents must be uploaded as pdf-files:

  • Letter of motivation (1-2 pages) explaining why you want to study the AEG program, including the specialization and modules you are interested in
    For this you must review the contents of the program on the website and in the module handbook!
    (for a letter written via AI, you will not receive points)
  • Curriculum vitae
  • Bachelor's certificate (if already available) and transcript of records with the information about your overall grade (final or preliminary CGPA), the maximum possible and the minimum passing grade [required for the conversion of your grade into the German grading system]
  • Proof of English language proficiency
  • Reference letters from lecturers or professionals or certificates from an internship/job [optional]
  • for applicants from China/Vietnam/India: APS-certificate

NOTE: For documents that are not in English or German, an official translation into one of these languages must be submitted.

Information regarding late arrival

The AEG program will start with orientation days in the first week of October. The winter semester lectures start in mid-October. If you arrive after November 1, you should be aware of the following:

  • You will have already missed important classes, and chances are slim that you will pass the mandatory exams required for participation in most classes of the summer semester!
    Since classes are offered once a year, this means that you will not be able to join the regular AEG program until the following winter semester.

Students who received late admission to the AEG program should also be aware of the following:

  • You need to find accommodation!
    This is extremely (!!!) difficult and expensive on the private market, and places in student dorms have already been allocated. For information on student housing see the links in the FAQ's section.

Do not ignore these problems!

If you cannot arrive on time, it is best to reapply for the following year. This would also give you enough time to apply for a visa as well as for student housing.
