The Computer Science Department of the Faculty of Science at Tübingen University
invites applications for two positions:
Full Professor (W3) of “Machine Learning in Science”
The positions are due to commence in September 2019.
The professorships are part of the new Cluster of Excellence “Machine Learning: New Perspectives for Science“. A successful candidate is expected to carry out internationally competitive research in the field of machine learning in science. The research focus can be in the area of machine learning itself or in its applications to a particular scientific application discipline. Possible research directions could be but are not limited to the following ones:
- Probabilistic modeling, for example uncertainty quantification in scientific models, Bayesian active learning for experimental design, or Bayesian deep learning
- Interactive and interpretable machine learning for science
- Automated learning of scientific models, incorporating prior domain knowledge, discovery of latent variables, automatic model criticism, adversarial learning
- Applications of machine learning methods to a specific scientific application domain such as physics, geoscience or social science.
Our goal is to cover at least two of these directions with the two professors. We expect the successful candidate to actively contribute to the cluster of excellence: by conducting collaborative research projects at the intersection between machine learning and an applied discipline, and by contributing to some of the management tasks of the cluster. In terms of teaching we request the new professor to participate in our new international Master of Science program “Machine Learning”, and in the long run we expect him/her to be willing to contribute to our standard Bachelor and Master of Science programs in computer science and cognitive science. During the running time of the cluster the position comes with a significantly reduced teaching load.
Requirements for appointment are professorship status or an equivalent qualification and a record of teaching excellence.
