The Cluster of Excellence "Machine Learning - New Perspectives for Science" at the University of Tübingen offers several positions as
Leader of an independent research group (TV-L E14/E13, 100%)
to be filled as soon as possible.
The call is aimed at young scientists who have completed an excellent doctorate in relevant fields. Applications with varying degrees of research experience after the doctorate are welcome: we are going to appoint early career groups for researchers directly after the doctorate (funded by the equal opportunity funds), as well as more experienced group leaders with some years of postdoc experience.
The research groups will initially run for four years. After positive evaluation, they can be extended by up to three more years. All groups come with funding for PhD students/postdocs and independent research funding.
Successful applicants are expected to conduct internationally recognized research on methods of machine learning. In accordance with the setup of the cluster, the research focus of the groups can be in the field of machine learning itself, its application in a scientific discipline or the philosophical/ethical reflection of machine learning in science.
We expect expertise in at least one of the following research fields:
- Probabilistic modelling, e.g. quantification of uncertainty in scientific models, Bayesian active learning for experimental design, Bayesian deep learning.
- Interactive and interpretable machine learning in science
- Automatic learning of models in science, e.g. by integrating prior knowledge, discovery of latent variables or automatic model critique
- Development of machine learning methods for a specific scientific discipline, such as physics, neuroscience, medicine, bioinformatics, geosciences, linguistics, archaeology or social sciences.
- Philosophy of science and ethics of machine learning
It is expected that the group leaders will actively participate in the Cluster of Excellence and carry out joint research projects at the interface between machine learning and an applied scientific discipline. Participation organization and implementation of the Cluster of Excellence is desirable.
The University aims to increase the proportion of women in research and teaching and therefore urges suitably qualified women scientists to apply. Qualified international researchers are expressly invited to apply. Severely disabled persons with equal aptitude will be given preferential consideration.
Applications with the usual documents should be sent in electronic form (as a single PDF, at most 5 MB) to the office of the Cluster of Excellence (email@example.com) by March 10, 2019. Questions can also be directed to the office.
We are hiring an administrative assistant. As the knowledge of the german language is mandatory, please check out the german job announcement.
The Computer Science Department of the Faculty of Science at Tübingen University
invites applications for two positions:
Full Professor (W3) of “Machine Learning in Science”
The positions are due to commence in September 2019.
The professorships are part of the new Cluster of Excellence “Machine Learning: New Perspectives for Science“. A successful candidate is expected to carry out internationally competitive research in the field of machine learning in science. The research focus can be in the area of machine learning itself or in its applications to a particular scientific application discipline. Possible research directions could be but are not limited to the following ones:
- Probabilistic modeling, for example uncertainty quantification in scientific models, Bayesian active learning for experimental design, or Bayesian deep learning
- Interactive and interpretable machine learning for science
- Automated learning of scientific models, incorporating prior domain knowledge, discovery of latent variables, automatic model criticism, adversarial learning
- Applications of machine learning methods to a specific scientific application domain such as physics, geoscience or social science.
Our goal is to cover at least two of these directions with the two professors. We expect the successful candidate to actively contribute to the cluster of excellence: by conducting collaborative research projects at the intersection between machine learning and an applied discipline, and by contributing to some of the management tasks of the cluster. For further information on this cluster of excellence please visit: http://www.ml-in-science.uni-tuebingen.de/
In terms of teaching we request the new professor to participate in our new international Master of Science program “Machine Learning”, and in the long run we expect him/her to be willing to contribute to our standard Bachelor and Master of Science programs in computer science and cognitive science. During the running time of the cluster the position comes with a significantly reduced teaching load.
Requirements for appointment are professorship status or an equivalent qualification and a record of teaching excellence.
Tübingen University is particularly interested in applications from female candidates for this position and therefore, strongly encourages women to apply. In line with its internationalization agenda, the university welcomes applications from researchers outside Germany.
Applicants with disabilities who possess equivalent qualifications will be given preferential treatment.
Applications with supporting documents (cover letter, Curriculum Vitae, list of publications and teaching experience, teaching statement, research statement (with intended collaboration), diplomas/certificates) and the completed “application form” (https://uni-tuebingen.de/en/faculties/faculty-of-science/faculty/service/appointment-procedures/) should be sent via email as a single PDF-file to: Dean of the Faculty of Science, Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Rosenstiel (career). @mnf.uni-tuebingen.de
The closing date for applications is January 10, 2019. Enquiries may also be directed to the Dean.
