Doctorate in Indology

A doctorate in Indology is based on the doctoral degree regulations of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities (https://uni-tuebingen.de/de/12123). The doctorate consists of a dissertation, which must contain significant research findings in a limited thematic area, and an oral doctoral examination.

Indology at the University of Tübingen does not offer a structured doctoral program. It is not possible to automatically enrol as a doctoral student. Prospective doctoral candidates must have a Master's degree in a related subject as a formal requirement. They must independently find a professor who works as closely as possible to the planned doctoral project and convince him or her to take on the supervision. An application is informal and can be submitted at any time. It should include an academic CV, a letter of motivation and a 5-8 page description of the doctoral project. Funding for a doctorate is independent of acceptance as a doctoral candidate and does not include a scholarship or a position. The Department of Indology has one doctoral position, which is currently filled. Should it become vacant, it will be advertised via the usual e-mail lists and on the homepage.

Currently, two people are formally authorized to supervise doctorates in Indology in Tübingen; please refer to their personal homepages for their main areas of work:
•    Prof. Dr. Heike Oberlin
•    Juniorprofessorin Dr. Claire Maes
