The collected works of August Wilhelm Schlegel (1767-1845), one of the most important authors of German romanticism, has only been published as an incomplete collection of his writings by Eduard Böckings in 16 volumes (1846/47), and there has been no complete collection of his works, let alone a critical edition.

The goal of this project, which has been financed by the DFG since 2012, is to ameliorate this situation through the publication of a critical edition of Schlegel’s university lectures, which have appeared since 1989 through the Schöningh Verlag Paderborn, through the completion of editions of the volumes IV-VI.

This edition consists of the Ifollowing volumes and lectures:

Vol. I, II/1 und II/2: Vorlesungen über Ästhetik [1798-1804;1827]

Vol. III: Vorlesungen über Encyklopädie [1803]

Vol. IV: Vorlesungen über dramatische Kunst und Literatur [1809-1811]

Vol. V und VI: Bonner Vorlesungen [1818-1845]

The individual volumes contain documents regarding the production of the texts, a critical text apparatus, a page commentary, as well as a bibliography and registers..

This edition is being completed in cooperation with the Trierer Kompetenzzentrum für elektronische Erschließungs- und Publikationsverfahren in den Geisteswissenschaften, which presents the texts and commentaries in an Online-Portal after the publication of each volume. Scans of the manuscripts have been digitalized in cooperation with the Sächsischen Landesbibliothek – Staats- und Univ.-Bibliothek Dresden (SLUB), where Schlegel’s literary estate can been found online „Digitalen Sammlungen“. The completed edition is conceived as the first work group within a modularized collection of Schlegel’s works, where further modules would include critical editions of Schlegel’s lyrical works and critical essays.
